Why do swimmers swallow water?

Most swallowed water happens when a swimmer tries to breathe in while their mouth is still at or under the surface, or when they hold their breath and then gasp.

Practicing bubbles, breathing out underwater and in above water, builds a calm rhythm so the mouth opens only when it's clear.
